Robert Sabuda

Master paper engineer · pop-up books

Robert Sabuda (born March 8, 1965, in Wyandotte, Michigan) is an American paper engineer, illustrator, and author widely regarded as one of the foremost pop-up book artists in the world. He grew up in rural Pinckney, Michigan, the son of a mason and carpenter, and traces his obsession with movable books to a pop-up he discovered in a dentist's office as a child. He made his first pop-ups as a boy from manila filing folders his mother brought home from the Ford Motor Company.

Sabuda earned a BFA in communications design from Pratt Institute in 1987, interning at Dial Books for Young Readers while still a student. He published his first pop-up book, The Christmas Alphabet, in 1994, and went on to become a multiple #1 New York Times best-selling creator with over five million books in print in more than 25 languages. The New York Times called him 'indisputably the king of pop-ups' in 2003.

He has won the Movable Book Society's Meggendorfer Prize for Best Paper Engineering three times, and frequently collaborates with fellow paper engineer Matthew Reinhart, with whom he co-created the Encyclopedia Prehistorica and Encyclopedia Mythologica series.

Sabuda is known for intricate, architecturally precise white and metallic paper sculptures that erupt from the page, often paired with handcrafted illustration techniques like faux stained glass, batik, and papyrus-textured art.
