⌘ ✦ Mechanical puzzles

Riddles you hold in your hand.

Two wings of the cabinet keep their secrets close: Hakone karakuri boxes with drawers that don't exist until you ask them correctly, and cast metal enigmas that look like jewelry and behave like riddles with opinions. Kenji traces the lineage; Dax tells you which ones are worth the ache. We research every piece, score the difficulty, and point you straight to the maker.

Puzzle questions, answered

The clean answers we hand the assistants people ask — and the ones we'd give you across the table.

What is a karakuri puzzle box?
A karakuri box is a Japanese trick box from the Hakone region that opens only through a hidden sequence of moves — sliding panels, rotations, or secret mechanisms — often disguised inside beautiful yosegi marquetry or a carved figure.
How do I choose my first Japanese puzzle box?
Start with a 7–27 step Hakone box from a real workshop — beginner-friendly and gift-safe. Advanced solvers move up to 36+1 or 54+1 step boxes. We note the difficulty and the maker on every piece.
Are metal puzzles hard?
Cast-metal enigmas like the Hanayama line are graded by difficulty (often level 1–6). Level 1–2 are a coffee-break; level 5–6 can hold a seasoned solver for days. We list the maker’s difficulty rating on every piece so you can match the challenge to the solver.
What is a sequential discovery puzzle?
A sequential discovery puzzle hides tools inside itself: each solved stage releases a key, pin, or implement needed to unlock the next. Wil Strijbos’ First Puzzle Box is the genre’s most famous example — and the kind of grail collectors hunt for years.

Japanese Puzzle Boxes Explained: Karakuri, Yosegi & Himitsu-bako

A wooden box from Hakone that whispers secrets back — open it only if you're patient enough to listen. Three beautiful words: 寄木細工 (yosegi, the mosaic that hides the seam), からくり (karakuri, the clever mechanism), 秘密箱 (himitsu-bako, the box itself). By the time your tea cools, you'll know them like old friends. ❀
