Priority two · the fixed-content archive

Five living libraries.
Five very different commitments.

LCGs remove randomized boosters, not difficult decisions. This archive separates current lines, revised shelves, community stewardship, and legacy collecting before a beautiful box becomes an expensive misunderstanding.

File 01 · Current · campaign co-op

Arkham Horror: The Card Game

The deepest campaign life here. Buy the entry box, finish its teaching scenarios, then add one complete campaign instead of grazing across five cycles.

File 02 · Current · modular co-op

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

The easiest game here to bring back to the table on a weeknight. Start with the Core Set; add a campaign only after you know which hero and aspect rhythms your group enjoys.

File 03 · Community maintained · asymmetric duel

Android: Netrunner

Do not begin with a random old FFG core listing. System Gateway is the coherent modern teaching set; add opaque sleeves before mixing products because historical and current card backs differ.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

The revised shelf is the sane way in. The game is demanding even when your collection is correct, so learn the Core quests before mistaking difficulty for a shopping problem.

The universal LCG loadout

Four purchases that solve real table friction.

  1. 1Opaque sleeves for frequently shuffled player decks and mixed-back competitive systems.
  2. 2One active-deck box per player, labeled by investigator, hero, side, or fellowship.
  3. 3Dividers and token wells that shorten setup instead of merely making storage prettier.
  4. 4A playmat only when needed for zones, readability, camera contrast, or table protection.

Living card game questions, answered

What is the best LCG for a beginner?
Marvel Champions is the least intimidating weeknight start because scenarios stand alone and setup is comparatively fast. Arkham Horror is the stronger choice for a group that wants a continuing story. The Lord of the Rings rewards players who actively want difficult deck construction.
What is the difference between an LCG and a trading card game?
An LCG sells known, fixed card lists rather than randomized booster contents. You still build decks, but you buy a defined core, campaign, hero, investigator, or expansion product instead of chasing required cards through random packs.
Is Android: Netrunner still alive?
Fantasy Flight’s commercial line ended, but Null Signal Games maintains the modern community game, rules, formats, and System Gateway teaching product. New players should use that current community path rather than assuming an old retail core is the active standard.
Is A Game of Thrones Second Edition still in print?
It is a legacy line. The game remains playable and highly regarded, but new buyers should verify edition, completeness, and condition rather than expecting a current supported retail path.
What accessories should I buy for an LCG?
Start with sleeves for the decks you shuffle, a deck box for active decks, dividers for scenario or encounter sets, and small containers for tokens. Buy a large storage chest only after the collection creates real setup friction.
