Akio Yamamoto
Japanese sculptor and prolific Hanayama Cast puzzle designer
Akio Yamamoto is a Japanese sculptor and mechanical-puzzle designer, and one of the most prolific creators of puzzles in Hanayama's metal Cast Puzzle (Huzzle) series. He has been making disentanglement, coordinate-motion and other mechanical puzzles since the age of twenty, and entered the International Puzzle Party (IPP) design competition in 2008.
Yamamoto is responsible for a large share of Hanayama's non-maze cast puzzles, many of which translate natural and organic forms into elegant interlocking metal. His Cast Helix (2009), for example, was inspired by the morning glory and uses logarithmic-spiral grooves that cross at right angles, evoking a flower bud opening with twining tendrils; his Cast Vortex (2008) interlocks spiral-shaped pieces into a smooth, compact whole.
Over three decades he has designed numerous Hanayama titles — including a recurring marine-life theme — and his work is frequently cited among the best entries in the Cast series. Because he works through Hanayama, public biographical detail is thin, but his designs are well documented and widely collected.
Style signature
Sculptural cast-metal puzzles that turn organic and natural forms — flowers, spirals, sea creatures — into clean disentanglement and coordinate-motion mechanisms. Solutions rely on precise, often counter-intuitive three-dimensional movement.

Which Hanayama Cast puzzles did Akio Yamamoto design?
His designs include Cast Vortex, Cast Helix, Cast Radix, Cast Baroq, Cast Amour, Cast Dolce and Cast Dot, plus a series of marine-themed puzzles. Many are inspired by natural forms — the Helix, for instance, is modelled on the morning-glory flower.
