The Grail Board Game Price Index

What the hobby's hardest-to-find games actually cost new right now. We hand-check 14 grail board games against Amazon, BGG Marketplace, publisher stores and the big US retailers — street price, MSRP, whether it's in print, and the cost-per-hour that tells you if it's actually worth it. Point-in-time, refreshed monthly.

14 grails tracked 13 in print now 1 out of print as of July 2026
How to read this: prices are for a new copy from a real US retailer. When a game is out of print we show the secondary-market reality instead — so you're never comparing a $150 retail box to a $400 resale. Want to know which is worth it for you? Run the free Worth-It Calculator →

What makes a board game a "grail"?

A grail is the game you chase. It's usually a big-box campaign or deluxe title — expensive, component-heavy, frequently crowdfunded, and often out of print between printings. The appeal isn't just the box; it's the hundreds of hours the best of them deliver, which is exactly why sticker price is the wrong way to judge them. A $250 campaign you'll finish over a year can cost less per hour than a $40 game you play twice.

In print vs. out of print — the number that matters most

Grails are printed in waves. The same game can be $150 at retail during a print run and $400+ on the secondary market once it sells out — then snap back when a reprint lands. That's why this index tracks availability, not just price: an out-of-print grail's "price" is whatever the resale market decides, and that's a different decision than buying new. When a grail goes out of print, waiting for a reprint usually beats paying a scalper — unless it's a one-and-done KS exclusive.

Grail price questions, answered

What is a "grail" board game?
In the hobby, a grail is a high-investment, high-payoff game people chase for years — usually a big-box campaign or deluxe title that is expensive, often hard to find, and frequently out of print between printings. Think Kingdom Death: Monster, Frosthaven, or the deluxe Awaken Realms campaigns.
Are these prices new (retail) or secondary-market?
These are the prices to buy a NEW copy from a real US retailer as of July 2026, sourced from Amazon, BGG Marketplace, publisher stores and shops like Miniature Market, GameNerdz and Noble Knight. Where a game is out of print, we note the real secondary-market range separately so you are not comparing apples to oranges.
Why do grail prices move so much?
Most grails are printed in waves (often crowdfunded), so a copy can be $150 at retail during a print run and $400+ on the secondary market once it sells out — then snap back down when a reprint lands. In-print status matters as much as the number on the box.
Which grail is the best value?
Sticker price is misleading — a $250 campaign you play for 100+ hours can be cheaper per hour than a $60 game you play twice. Use our free Worth-It Calculator to rank these by cost-per-hour for how you actually play.
How often is this index updated?
Monthly. Board-game prices shift with print runs, restocks and reprints, so each refresh re-checks every title and updates the in-print flags and ranges. Last checked: July 2026.
