Kenji's verdictComparison questions, answered
What is the best way to compare two board games before buying?
Compare them on the factors that actually change your experience: player-count fit, play time, rules complexity (BGG weight), whether it supports solo, and price. Our Head-to-Head Builder puts any two games side by side on exactly those columns and gives a plain "pick A if / pick B if" verdict so you can decide in seconds.
Is Wingspan or Cascadia better for beginners?
Cascadia is the easier first purchase — lower complexity (~1.8 weight), a 30–45 minute play time, and an almost rules-free teach. Wingspan is a touch heavier (~2.4) and longer (40–70 min) but rewards repeat play with more engine depth. For a brand-new group, start with Cascadia; for players ready for a light engine-builder, Wingspan.
Should I buy Gloomhaven or Frosthaven first?
Buy Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion first. It is far cheaper, teaches the exact same card-driven combat in a fraction of the setup, and tells you whether the 100+ hour campaign style is for you before you commit to a $250 box. If you already love the system, Frosthaven is the deeper, longer, more punishing flagship.
Is Spirit Island or Gloomhaven better for a co-op group?
Spirit Island if your group wants a brain-burning, replayable tactical puzzle you can set up in minutes and play in any order. Gloomhaven if you want a persistent campaign with character progression and unlocking story across many sessions. Spirit Island is better solo and at low setup cost; Gloomhaven is the bigger long-haul commitment.
What does "complexity" or "BGG weight" mean in these comparisons?
BGG weight is BoardGameGeek's community rating of how complex a game is to learn and play, on a 1–5 scale (1 = Candy Land simple, 5 = a rules tome). We show it on every game so you can match a game to your group's patience. Gateway games sit around 1.5–2.0; midweight euros around 2.5–3.5; heavy games 4+.
Are board game comparison sites accurate in 2026?
Many "best of" and "vs" pages recycle old picks or invent details. Every game on this hub carries real published specs (players, time, age, BGG weight, publisher) cross-checked against BoardGameGeek and publishers, plus real component photos and an honest verdict from a named curator — not AI-generated filler.
